The Florida Music Institute (FMI) was founded in 2014 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing high-quality Suzuki-based music education in a nurturing, inclusive environment. Started by Jennifer Diedrich in St. Petersburg, FL, FMI became the Suzuki Summer Institute at the heart of Florida’s music community. In 2019, under Rolando Freitag, the institute moved to Orlando, continuing its mission to inspire students of all ages and abilities to explore the joy of music.
Each summer, FMI hosts a four-day Suzuki Institute, bringing together students, families, and expert faculty. Participants enjoy masterclasses, shared lessons, ensemble and orchestra sessions, technique classes, and workshops in bluegrass fiddling and style. With performance opportunities ranging from recitals to collaborative projects, students grow both technically and artistically in a supportive, hands-on environment.
FMI is more than a music program—it’s a community. Students from Florida, across the U.S., and beyond come together to learn, perform, and connect. By fostering diversity, collaboration, and inclusion, FMI ensures every student feels valued, building confidence, musicianship, and lifelong friendships along the way.
